Impatiens balsamina plants (balsam, LIB) have been widely used as traditional medicine for the treatment of aches, superficial infection, fingernail inflammation, isthmus, fractures etc. Moreover in some areas of China, people take this plant as a vegetable or anti-cancer herb, although there are currently no reports confirming the efficacy of this practice. Researcher from china (Zhi-Shan Ding et. al. , molecules, 2008, 13, 220-229) have reported the in vitro anti-tumor activity of LIB against human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line(HepG2).

As a preliminary study, they have used the Petroleum ether fraction (PEF), chloroform fraction (CHF), chloroform extract (CHE), ethyl acetate fraction (EAF), n-butanol (BUF) and water (WAF) of LIB leaves. MTT assays showed that only PEF, CHF and CHE showed some activity and were choosen for further study. But because of limited sample availability of PEF and CHF, only CHE was further studied. CHE was separate into 6 different fractions CHE1-6. Among them, CHE2 showed the most significant inhibitory activity. CHE2 showed strong cell inhibition effect as compared to curcumin too.

Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae) is one of the most important tropical plants in the world. It is a large tree whose fruits are liked by many people and commonly called as Mango.
Phytochemical research from different parts of M.indica has demonstrated the presence of various polyphenols, phytosterols, flavonoids and this species are widely used for the purpose of analgesic effect, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulant, antioxidant, antidiarrhea etc. Because of its vague biological importance, many researchers are interested in this species.
This post, as per the article (Molecules, 2009, 14, 1098; doi: 10.3390/molecules14031098), reveals the antiulcerogenic action of mentioned species’ leaf decoction on different experimental models in rodents. Previously, they have used the flower part for the study but it results reduced availability of the fruits in the market so they changed it to leaf part.

보성 녹차밭

A cup of tea early morning is quite refreshing. Almost all country in the world has trend of drinking tea. Generally it is divided into three basic categories; non-fermented, semi-fermented and fermented. Among these types, non-fermented tea i. e green tea has many healthy benefits. Fuzuki et al. has reported that green tea helps in cancer prevention (Cancer lett. 2002, 188, 9). It has been revealed that green tea showed its anti-cancer activity through inhibiton of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), growth factor-related cell signaling, activation of activator protein 1 ( AP-1) and nuclear factor-B (NF-kappa B), topoisomerase I, matrix metalloproteinases and other potential targets.

Be aware of swine flu!

Today during lunch time, some cafeteria personnel were distributing the mask for the prevention of swine flu. Everyone was taking and so do I. It was appreciable and good precaution step that university has taken. I am trying to add little contribution in spreading awareness about swine flu through this post. Swine flu also called as swine influenza is an infection by any one of the several swine influenza virus as H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2 and H2N3 commonly present in swine (pig) population thus named as swine virus. Two influenza antiviral medications recommended for use against novel H1N1 flu are oseltamivir (trade name Tamiflu®) and zanamivir (Relenza ®).
General symptoms of swine flu are cough, fever which is usually high but is sometimes absent, bodyaches, sorethroat, chills, vomiting and diarrhea, tiredness, headache, chest discomfort. Swine flu is not transmitted eating pork meat. CDC (Centers for diseases control and prevention) has stated that it is safe to eat properly handled and cooked pork meat. Some other daily tips that has stated by CDC for protection against swine flu are as follows. They seem pretty simple but following such small things will prevent spreading of swine flu in greater extent.

Process of discovering “new drug from molecules” takes a lot of skill, knowledge, patience, dedication and of course handsome amount of investment. Even after discovery and approval of new drug, it takes many years to recover the investment. Many universities and pharmaceutical companies are investing lots of money in the drug discovery research and in return people are able to fight and survive against many diseases.
Basically, in laboratory drug discovery involves three major phases; finding hit compounds, modification of physical and chemical properties and finally making it suitable for clinical trials.

Researcher from Neuroscience, Pfizer Global Research and Development, Connecticut, U. S (J. Med. Chem. 2009) have added a new hope in the treatment of Schizophrenia. They have discovered a new compound that has entered the clinical trial as a candidate for the treatment of Schizophrenia. According to the investigators, it was choosen for clinical trial because of its significant and specific phosphodiesterase (PDE)10A inhibitory activity.
Inhibitors of PDE10A are believed to regulate cyclic nucleotide signaling in the corticostriatothalamic circuit. They have already shown that PDE10A inhibitors are active in various preclinical models that may predict efficacy in the treatment of schizophrenia (J. Pharm. Exp. Ther. 2008).
